Sailing in Croatia's wonderful archipelago offers an unforgettable experience with nature, culture and local cuisine. Days spent at sea often work up an appetite – sea air and activity increase hunger, and on a boat you can easily prepare delicious meals for the whole crew. In this article, we provide tips for planning meals, purchasing equipment, and enjoying the flavors of Croatia on a boat, so that dining while sailing is as delicious and hassle-free as possible.
We recommend ordering food supplies in advance through us. We will provide you with an order form (minimum purchase €200), and you will receive the food supplies delivered directly to the boat - this way you avoid sweating with the loads. Of course, you can go and choose fresh fish and meat yourself, but at least heavy needs are convenient to order in advance.
In Croatia, even the smallest villages have shops where you can get basic food such as fresh bread, milk and butter. In larger cities and islands, there are vegetable and fish markets, as well as supermarkets, where you can find a wide selection of fruits, vegetables and meat. It's especially exciting to buy oysters and other seafood directly from the farmers - fresh, straight from the sea to the plate.
Breakfast: Start the day with a delicious and versatile breakfast that provides energy for the start of the sailing day. Make French toast or fried eggs - or even both! Fresh breads and spreads, cold meats and cheeses make breakfast full
You can also supplement breakfast with various cereals, yogurt and fruit. A selection of cold and hot drinks, such as coffee, tea and fresh juices, crowns the morning. If you want to try something special, make waffles, flatbreads or crepes, which are easy and delicious options for the breakfast table.
Lunch: Lunch can be simple but tasty. For example, try pasta with bolognese sauce, creamy mushroom sauce, or a lighter vegetarian option such as zucchini and fresh tomatoes. Another option is risotto, to which you can add local vegetables, such as peppers and zucchini, or fresh fish straight from the sea.
A fresh lunch salad can be made by combining green salad, arugula, tomatoes and paprika. You can also add fried chicken to the salad - for example, fry chicken fillets or strips in the boat's kitchen and add them to the salad to add richness
Snacks: You often get hungry quickly at sea, so prepare yourself with snacks: fruit salad, breads and local cheeses, Croatian prosciutto, olives and local Plavac wine are great snacks. We also recommend trying Croatian melons and watermelons, which are particularly sweet and juicy.
Dinner ashore: In the evenings, we recommend getting to know the local food culture and dining in restaurants located on the beaches and in the harbors, where you can enjoy the authentic Croatian atmosphere and delicious dishes. Croatian dinner tables offer everything from fresh fish and seafood to traditional peka dishes and grilled delicacies.
A tip for ordering fish in a restaurant: In Croatia, whole fish are often priced by the kilo. So if you order a whole fish, it's good to be careful - the bill may surprise you! In general, a single dose is a cheaper choice and easier to estimate in advance.
In the mornings, before starting the day's sailing trip, it is convenient to prepare meals in advance. For example, you can make ready-made sandwiches, wash and chop vegetables, and plan meals according to what supplies are available. Make good use of the boat's storage spaces and consider simple recipes that don't require a lot of dishes - this way you'll reduce the need to do dishes.
If you want to focus fully on relaxation, you can book a hostess who will take care of the meals and the comforts of the boat. The hostess takes care of the cooking, setting and cleaning, so you can focus on enjoying the sailing experience and the beautiful scenery of Croatia.
